Gansu, China - On September 4, 2022, "Shine the Silk Road" - Demonstration of Remote 5G Robotic Surgery on Animal, hosted by Gansu Provincial Hospital and Gansu General Surgery Clinical Medical Center together with other relevant units, and co-sponsored by Shanghai MicroPort MedBot (Group) Co., Ltd. ("MicroPort® MedBot®") and China Telecom Co., Ltd. Gansu Branch, was successfully completed in the home office of Gansu Provincial Hospital.

During this Silk Road journey of 15 days starting from August 20, the surgical robot team of Gansu Provincial Hospital traveled around 3,000 km along with the China Health and Medical Rescue vehicle platform that carried the Toumai® surgical robot. The team visited Lanzhou New Area Branch of Gansu Provincial Hospital, Gansu Wuwei Tumour Hospital, Jiayuguan, Jiayuguan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Jiuquan People’s Hospital, and Jinta People's Hospital, and finally returned to the home office of Gansu Provincial Hospital. This journey has proven the stability and reliability of Toumai® performing remote surgery in complex environment, and its capability to promote the development of robotic surgeries in China’s remote areas.

Despite of the chilling weather, local experts and doctors were all enthusiastic to witness the Toumai® surgical robot. At every stop, the demonstration attracted over 100 doctors and nurses, reflecting the sincere wishes and expectations of our health care workers for the Chinese-developed surgical robots. Yuntao Ma, the director of the surgical robot team of Gansu Provincial Hospital, demonstrated the basic remote surgery skills of Toumai® surgical robot to the onsite experts and doctors, and also provided surgical guidance to them together with the training team of MicroPort® MedBot®, including demonstration of basic surgery skills of remote 5G robots, remote 5G robotic cholecystectomy for the animal, remote 5G animal gastrointestinal surgery, remote 5G phantom surgery, remote 5G robot modular training, as well as lectures and skill training on remote 5G robotic surgery.

The first stop of this activity was in Lanzhou New Area Branch of Gansu Provincial Hospital, followed by Gansu Wuwei Tumour Hospital, Jiayuguan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Jiuquan People’s Hospital, and Jinta People's Hospital. The team provided demonstration and instruction to the local health care workers in these hospitals. In Jiayuguan, known as "the Impregnable Pass under the Heaven", the demonstration was performed with the advanced unmanned aerial vehicle ad hoc network technology. In combination with the 5G technology, a smooth communication was guaranteed. The establishment of Chinese-developed system outside the hospital indicated the success of the first remote 5G robotic surgery skill demonstration on animal outside a hospital environment, laying a technical foundation for the future implementation of remote robotic surgery in the field (complex surgery environment). So the success of this demonstration is of crucial importance for clinical medicine, field emergency rescue, and the combination of robotic medicine and communication engineering. This activity also showed that Toumai® surgical robot was able to perform remote 5G surgery under multi-dimensional, multi-layer complex environment, which further promoted the development of robotic surgery in hospitals at all levels in Gansu province.

The success in this demonstration of remote 5G robotic surgery on animal benefits from the advantages of 5G technology such as high speed, low latency, wide bandwidth, and wide range, which transformed "remote planning" into "remote operation", and realized the vision of "flying remote scalpel" and a surgical mode of "Extend information communication and reduce the travel time of patients". In future, it will significantly promote medical coordination, implementation of hierarchical diagnosis and treatment and building of WITMED(Wise Information Technology of med)in our country.

Yuntao Ma, the director of the surgical robot team of Gansu Provincial Hospital, said, "The successful combination of Toumai® surgical robot with the remote 5G technology has proven that the surgical operation in Gansu province is ready to enter the remote 5G era". He also expressed that the meaning of this journey is to bring the surgical robot technology to the northwest region of China, to help local surgeons get acquainted with the advanced surgical robot technology and idea, and promote the popularization of robotic surgeries in China.

Professor Hui Cai, the president of Gansu Provincial Hospital said, "As the Chinese-developed robotic technology grows increasingly mature, 5G empowerment has become another trend in the development of minimally invasive surgery. On the one hand, 5G empowerment can enable better utilization of the remote advantages of the robot, and promote the integration and balance of regional health care; on the other hand, the treatment of challenging diseases may receive more accurate diagnosis and scientific surgery guidance. This will actually drive the move of quality medical resources to wider and remote areas, and will also reduce the flow of patients during the pandemic." This activity has played an important role in the further development of robotic surgery in health care institutions of Gansu province, and is also of significance for promoting the building of medical treatment alliance, remote coordination, hierarchical diagnosis and treatment and WITMED.

Prior to this journey, Honghu Orthopedic Surgical Robot has finished a journey to Yun’nan. The journey started from Dali, passed through Chuxiong and Kunming, traversing as far as Zhaotong and Diqing to the north, Pu'er and Honghe to the south, Qujing to the east and Nujiang to the west, covering 14 hospitals in 9 prefectures and performing Chinese-developed robot-assisted knee replacement surgeries on 50 local patients. During the journey to Yun’nan, Honghu Orthopedic Surgical Robot completed the first 5G remote knee replacement surgery in Shanghai, Kunming, and Huizhou interconnected via remote 5G technology. Experts and doctors in different regions can be connected via remote 5G technology, discuss cases in real time and optimize preoperative plan, which will significantly drive the move of superior medical resources, improve the balance of health care, and bring more benefits to the patients.

With the advancement of 5G technology in our country, remote operation has achieved impressive development. In remote areas where the medical care lags behind, local doctors are eager to obtain guidance from experts, and learn advanced, complex operation skills. Remote 5G technology may not only enable full control of the operation via remote connection, but also support surgery and repeated practice over the key part of the surgery. This will considerably improve the capability of local hospitals to perform complex surgeries, and also help solve the bottleneck of performing surgery in prefecture-level cities, or even in the wild, thus bringing more benefits to the patients. Besides, thanks to the remote 5G operation technology, patients can receive remote surgical treatment from top experts "without leaving their hometowns", and there is no need to seek medical treatment in other places in this scenario.

With world-leading capability in robot R&D, MicroPort® MedBot® has extensive experience and outstanding innovation ability in performing remote 5G surgeries with surgical robots. Toumai® surgical robot, a leading product in performing remote 5G surgery, has ensured the smooth implementation of the 5G training during this trip to Guancheng, Jiayuguan in spite of challenging weather, bumpy road and sand wind. Its accuracy and stability during remote 5G operation has been fully demonstrated. Toumai® surgical robot, with a variety of advantages including the wrist-moved surgery instruments, high reproductivity with 3D vision, simplicity of intuitive master-slave teleoperation, low latency and high coordination of each module, will play an important role in helping Chinese doctors perform a remote operation.

Mr. Yu Liu, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of MicroPort® MedBot® , said, "The revolutionary breakthrough in the field of remote 5G operation achieved by the Toumai® will contribute to the scientific distribution and effective shift of superior medical resources from the developed areas in the eastern coastal region of China to the western region, narrow the gap between the hierarchical diagnosis and treatment, and make medical services more affordable. This is another effective innovation in response to the medical system reform proposed by the National Health Commission, and also a reflection of MicroPort® MedBot®’s aspiration – ‘Make Surgery Easier, Safer and Less Invasive’.”
