Beside the patient's surgical platform in the operating room of the branch of Gansu Provincial People's Hospital, a Toumai® four-arm robotic surgical system is deftly performing various surgical actions with precision and stability. Surprisingly, there is no surgeon physically present around it. All the commands are being sent from the main operating room of Gansu Provincial People's Hospital.

On January 8th, under the assistance of the Toumai®, Dr. Zhou Fenghai from the Department of Urology at Gansu Provincial People's Hospital successfully completed a radical cystectomy and a radical nephrectomy, achieving two consecutive difficult and complex urological surgeries. With this achievement, Toumai® has become the first in the world to reach 100 cases in 5G human clinical tele-surgery exploration, with a 100% success rate. The breakthrough innovation of MicroPort® MedBot® in the field of 5G applications, as well as its pioneering research and exploration in tele-surgery and intelligent surgery, not only marks a significant milestone in the development of surgical science in China but also demonstrates the extraordinary technical strength, exceptional performance, and groundbreaking clinical applications of Chinese-developed robotic surgical systems. It is leading and promoting the development of surgical science in China ahead of developed countries in Europe and America towards intelligent tele-surgery.

Since the first collaboration with Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital in June 2022 to perform three urological surgeries remotely across a distance of over 5,000 kilometers, MicroPort® MedBot® has collaborated with more than ten renowned tertiary hospitals in China to conduct 5G remote surgery explorations in Xinjiang, Gansu, Fujian, Henan, Ningxia, Guizhou, Hebei, Hainan, Jilin, and other regions. These explorations have covered a wide range of high-difficulty and complex procedures in general surgery, urology, thoracic surgery, gynecology, and pediatric surgery, setting numerous world-first records and showcasing the leading technology and outstanding clinical achievements of Chinese-developed Toumai® in the field of tele-surgery. This has opened up new perspectives and provided new directions for the development of minimally invasive surgery in China. Currently, Gansu Provincial People's Hospital and the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University have both surpassed 30 cases of 5G tele-surgery.

Data shows that in the implemented 5G tele-surgeries and experiments, urological surgeries accounted for over 30% of the total, while general surgeries, including hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgeries and gastrointestinal surgeries, accounted for over 60%. Moreover, the Toumai® robot has achieved a series of breakthroughs: the longest surgical distance (over 5,000 kilometers), the most complex procedures (over 70 cases of level III and level IV surgeries), the widest range of indications, the highest number of consecutive surgeries (over 10 cases), and the most difficult procedures (three consecutive cases of radical prostatectomy). It has also set over 15 national and global records for tele-surgeries, including radical gastrectomy, cholecystectomy, liver resection, radical prostatectomy, hysterectomy, spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy, radical cystectomy, radical nephrectomy, metabolic surgery for weight loss, the first pediatric tele-surgery, and the world's first consecutive robotic radical prostatectomy surgery. Additionally, it has conducted the world's first high-altitude 5G robotic laparoscopic tele-surgery experiment on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The 100 cases of 5G tele-surgery exploration have covered nearly 30 cities, connected over 30 hospitals, and achieved a transmission distance of up to 5,000 kilometers, with a cumulative transmission distance exceeding 60,000 kilometers. This demonstrates the exceptional stability and leading advantages of the Toumai® robot in 5G tele-technology. Based on the architecture of the 5G tele-surgery system, with advanced technologies such as "dual-machine hot backup," "multi-network integration," and "intelligent encoding," Toumai® achieves a multi-point collaborative tele-surgery system with two control consoles controlling a single patient's surgical platform. The seamless transfer mechanism of control ensures precise implementation of multi-point collaborative surgery, providing low latency and high security advantages. It allows the lead surgeon to have a clearer view and perform more precise surgeries, ensuring patient safety.
